HORST WITZEL AWARD
As part of its ongoing commitment to science education, Cephalon sponsors the Horst Witzel Prize in Organic Chemistry. The $25,000 prize is awarded to an outstanding graduate student in organic chemistry from a university in the greater Philadelphia region.
Cephalon established the prize in 2007 to honor the contributions of the late Dr. Horst Witzel, and to encourage scientific curiosity and study in the field of organic chemistry. Dr. Witzel, a renowned industry business leader and one of the first chemists to synthesize and manufacture steroids, was a member of the company’s board of directors for 15 years.
Since the company’s founding in 1987, Cephalon has worked with more than 100 organizations and students of all levels to advance and support science education through awards, contributions, donations and research.
“To a research-based biopharmaceutical company like Cephalon, scientific achievement is our mission, and our passion,” said Frank Baldino, Jr., Ph.D., Chairman and CEO of Cephalon. “It is our hope that the Witzel Award inspires the next generation of future chemists because a great idea today may lead to a medical breakthrough tomorrow.”
